Starting Out: Levels 1 to 43
There is some debate as to the best way to gain these levels. My personal favorite method is to use
the Fist of Guthix minigame, located around level 8 wilderness directly North of Varrock. Make sure you are in a world in
which Fog is played to do this.
From tutorial island, drop all your items except your pick. Walk to the mine South-west of Varrock
and mine a full inventory of clay. Take this to the Grande Exchange and, after doing the short G.E. tutorial, sell it.
Then buy either a set of full bronze or full iron armor. From here, you are ready to do Fog.
First you will need to cast a few wind strikes on people until you get level 3 Magic. Wear your full metal
armor, as well as a weapon that is not a staff, so that your spells are not successful (they
should "splash"). You will still gain the base Magic exp for casting the spells. From level 3, you will cast Confuse
until you can use Weaken at level 11, Curse at level 19, and finally Bind at level 20 (you should still be wearing your full
metal armor and "splashing" your spells for all of this). As these spells do not deal damage, you will not get any Hit
Points exp for using them. Continue using the Bind spell until you reach level 43.
Be warned that this method involves a lot of clicking. Generally when your opponent sees that you
are just casting these non-damage spells(and the fact that you are probably level 3 - 20) they will stop running and
stand in or near the middle, allowing you to train on them. Asking nicely always helps, too. =)
If this method isn't for you, there is another way. The most common is casting Confuse, Weaken,
and then Curse on various NPC's. The absolute best place to do this is the river that runs by the Champion's Guild,
South of Varrock. There are about 20+ ducks in the river that you can Curse over and over again. The down-side to this method
is that it is a bit more expensive, as you will need to buy the runes. Make sure to bring your earth staff!
The Middle Levels: 43 to 55
Superheating. If you don't want spend more money on Curses, and in fact want the potential to make
a bit of money, start doing this as soon as you hit level 43 Magic.
There are several different ways for going about this, depending on your smithing level. I will assume
it is level 1 for now. In this case, the first thing you should do is the Knight's Sword Quest. This will give
you enough experience for 29 Smithing. Next step is 15 mining if you don't have it already. Mine clay if you need to
train, and sell it for a very good profit.
Once you have reached these levels, you are ready to begin superheating. Simply mine iron ore and
superheat it into iron bars for a profit. If you wield a fire staff, and have your pick and nature runes in your inventory,
you can even superheat while waiting for the ore to respawn or while walking back to the bank.
Soon, you will hit level 30 smithing, which gives you another option to consider: continue what you've
been doing, or start banking the iron ore. You can then purchase coal and superheat steel bars for extra smithing xp
and slightly more cash. This will cause you to level your magic a bit slower.
The Upper Levels: 55 and higher
Now High-Level Alchemy comes into play, probably the most common method of raising magic. Certain items
are particularly good to alch, due to the fact that you don't lose as much money. The absolute best items to alch in F2p are
adamant platebodies, generally losing 30-40gp per alch. Other good items include adamant chainbodies, adamant maces,
adamant square shields, rune maces, and rune daggers. It really comes down to how much you are willing to lose. Most of these
items will lose less thatn 90gp per alch on average, but it's always wise to keep up-to-date on the price of these items,
as they can fluctuate greatly from day to day. If you notice that the price of nature runes are unusually low, it's always
a good idea to stock up.
Some people will find that alching is just too expensive for them. You can always go back to superheating.
Once you're up to mithril bars at level 50 Smithing, you can superheat for almost no loss, and sometimes you will even make
money. It's slightly slower exp than alching, as you will need to bank much more often and it's 53 exp per spell rather
than 65, but for those who don't want to make 15mil+ to spend on alching, superheating mithril bars can be done for about
a third of the cost.
